If it is passed as it stands, it will see the introduction of a power for any member of an Garda Siochana to remove any person he or she believes to be an ‘illegal immigrant’ from the state, on the spot –what is often referred to as summary removal.

Claire McCarthy, Solicitor and Policy Officer at Nasc will introduce the Coalition’s concerns about the Bill and what you can do to support the campaign for a fair immigration system.

Solidarity Books, 8pm, Thursday December 2nd – Immigration legislation in Ireland: is a regime of summary removal immanent?

The Immigration Residence and Protection Bill 2010 is continuing to make its torturous way through the Oireachtas system, despite everything. Some 21 of its 168 amendments have been passed by the Select Justice Committee over the last few weeks, and it remains to be seen whether Minister for Justice and Law Reform Dermot Ahern will manage to push this massive piece of legislation through in the lifetime of this government.

If it is passed as it stands, it will see the introduction of a power for any member of an Garda Siochana to remove any person he or she believes to be an ‘illegal immigrant’ from the state, on the spot –what is often referred to as summary removal.

An NGO coalition comprising The Crosscare Migrant Project, Doras Luimní, the Immigrant Council of Ireland, Irish Refugee Council, Migrant Rights Centre Ireland, The Integration Centre and Nasc: The Irish Immigrant Support Centre has formed to campaign against this and other aspects of the Bill.

Claire McCarthy, Solicitor and Policy Officer at Nasc will introduce the Coalition’s concerns about the Bill and what you can do to support the campaign for a fair immigration system.

In the meantime, of if you can’t make it, like the Facebook page “No to Summary Removal” or see the sites of any of the organisations, to learn more
