Campaign for Free Education

Fees of €3,000 threatened

Garda Brutality against Students

How do we Build the campaign from here?

Last Wednesday, The Students in Solidarity Campaign, in conjunction with the Free Education for Everyone Campaign organised a "Left Block" to march in the National Student Demonstration organised by USI. Recognising the futility of marching from A to B and listening to the same speeches from aspiring politicians, many of these students joined us in breaking from the main demonstration and marching to the Department of Finance where a sit in demonstration was held.

However, this act of non-violent direct action was met with a brutal response from the forces of the state. As Riot police, repeatedly charged seated students who offered no significant resistance, several students suffered head injuries, while one female student was knocked unconscious and dumped on the side of the road.

At the moment the Fianna Fáil/ Green Party government is threatening a €1,500 rise in the annual registration fee for students, this would mean that students would have to pay €3,000 a year simply to receive an education. This would be yet another powerful obstacle in the way of working class people being able to receive third level education.

UCD SIS have organised a public meeting to discuss the events of last Wednesday and how to progress the campaign for Free Education from here.

1pm in UCD Arts Block
Room F104
