Join us for a one-day conference that aims to build greater solidarity with social movements in Colombia
Building solidarity with Colombia – a one-day conference on October 10th
Social movements in Colombia face some of the most daunting challenges anywhere in the world. A reactionary political establishment demonises all critics of the status quo as “accomplices of terrorism” and uses the state intelligence services to spy on journalists, lawyers and trade union leaders. Paramilitary death squads use ruthless terror to intimidate their opponents, carrying out assassinations and massacres with the complicity of the state. Calls for democracy and social justice are greeted with bullets by an elite determined to cling onto all of its privileges. Yet the struggle for a better Colombia continues – and it needs our support.
Grupo Raíces – the Irish Colombia Solidarity Group is organising a one-day conference in Dublin on Sunday October 10th to bring together activists interested in solidarity work with Colombia. We will be discussing the work that has been done in recent years and asking how we can build greater awareness of Colombia in the trade union movement, politics, the media and other fields. We will be joined by a Colombian guest speaker who has been active in social movements and has helped to build solidarity links between European campaigners and Colombia.
The conference will be held in the Pearse Centre, 27 Pearse Street from 11am to 3pm. There will be a break with lunch available. If you are interested in attending, please contact us at raices2007@gmail.com. We will be able to send you a number of important documents about the current situation in Colombia that can help inform our discussions on the day.
