The First Gay Activist Film

A hypnotic thriller, 'Different from the Others' is also a remarkable historical document. The flourishing of art and activism in Germany in the early years of the twentieth century came to a dramatic close in 1933, when the Nazi regime began to systematically destroy books, artworks, and films they considered too provocative or ‘decadent’. This extraordinary film miraculously survived, in a damaged copy which was discovered in 1979, and restored with the help of stills. 'Different from the Others' is a landmark in gay/human rights filmmaking, and this is a rare opportunity to watch it on the screen.

DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS
Germany. 1919. Silent. B&W. 50 min.
Original title: Anders als die Anderen
Dir. Richard Oswald
Cast: Conrad Veidt, Fritz Schulz, Reinhold Scheunzel, Magnus Hirschfeld
Script: Richard Oswald and Magnus Hirschfeld
Different from the Others, directed by Richard Oswald in 1919, was co-written by the pioneer human rights activist Magnus Hirschfeld, who set up the Institute for the Study of Human Sexuality, published extensively, and lobbied tirelessly for gay equality. Hirschfeld also appears in the film as himself, a psychologist counselling a young gay man and explaining to him that he has to be himself and that it is homophobic society the one who is sick. As a homosexual Jew, Hirchfeld was doubly targeted by the Nazis, who burned down all traces of the German gay-rights movement. The first gay resource centre in Ireland, in Dublin’s Temple Bar, was named ‘The Hirschfeld Centre’ to honour this extraordinary man. Different from the Others is not all about politics, it is also an effective thriller about a respected gay musician who becomes the victim of blackmail.
