Croke Park Deal - Thanks, but no thanks

Public meeting organised to discuss the proposed deal for public sector workers and why it should be rejected.

PUBLIC MEETING ON PUBLIC SERVICE PROPOSALS

A Public Meeting of rank and file trade unionists is to take place in the Glasshouse Hotel, Sligo, tonight (Thursday night 22nd April) commencing at 8.00.p.m. for the purpose of organising opposition to the government’s Croke Park public service deal.

Already a number of local activists in SIPTU, the CPSU, IMPACT, and the TUI have declared support for the initiative.

Mr Brian O’Boyle, an activist in the Teachers Union of Ireland and a lecturer in St Angela’s College, who will preside at the meeting, has appealed for public service workers to attend the event.

“The government proposals emanating from the Croke Park talks are a recipe for the destruction of public services.” he said.

“These proposals must be rejected out of hand.  They would amount to the trade union movement folding up its tent and turning its back on its core function to protect members. It is shameful that certain General Secretaries of trade unions should seek to throw a lifeline to a failed government on its last legs that is hell bent on the destruction of public services so as to prop up banks such as Anglo Irish.

“Workers in the public service now have a choice.  They can vote for the government deal and accept dwindling income and more stressful conditions or they can campaign to reject the deal and vote to protect their jobs and incomes.” said Mr O’Boyle
