In a change to the previously advertised event Hopi is presenting a screening presents a screening of 'Offside', Jafar Panahi's acclaimed film this coming Thursday, 22 April at 8pm Solidarity Books, Douglas Street Cork.
The film tells the story of soccer mad Iranian girls who dress up as boys so that they can go to the world cup qualifying match in Tehran. Women are banned from attending all sporting events in Iran and face arrest and imprisonment if caught.
The production is both a serious examination of the level of repression and a light-hearted look at the ridiculous lengths the Islamic regime is prepared to go in order to keep control.
The director Jafar Panahi is a supporter of the green movement in Iran. He was arrested and imprisoned last month because of this and remains in prison. Hopi is campaigning for his release and the release of all political prisoners.
Hope to see you there – and let others know even if you can’t make it yourself,
Anne
