Republican's from Donegal and Fermanagh erected a memorial to IRA Volunteers who lay in an unmarked grave in Donegal Town since being killed in action during the Battle of Pettigo in June 1922.
In Donegal Town today a group of local Republican's (independent of any political party) erected a memorial to IRA Volunteers killed in action during the heroic Battle of Pettigo which took place in June 1922.
A few weeks following this battle Free State forces attacked the Irish Republican Army in the Four Courts, Dublin, at the behest of the British Government. Thus began the counter Revolution which saw the overthrow of the Republic and the reinforcing of the British imposed Treaty of surender and partition of Ireland.
Almost ninety years have passed since that time and the 32 County All Ireland Republic for which these men gave their lives is yet to be achieved.
Those involved have stressed that this memorial was erected to honour the sacrifice made by these men and also to ensure that the cause for which they died is not forgotten.
