SIPTU Protest - Liberty Hall - 3rd June 2009 - 12 noon
SIPTU is holding a protest meeting and march against cuts in the Community Sector. Already, the Government have made substantial cut in the following areas:
- National Drugs Strategy left in tatters with 17% cut in funding for projects
- Community Employment budget cut by up to 40%
- Capital Funding for Childcare Facilities Axed
- Community Childcare still struggling under the Subvention Scheme
- Community Development Projects funding cut by up to 15%
- Supports for older people down to 727,000 from 4.3 million
- Supports for the Community and Voluntary Sector cut by 32%
- Overseas Development cut by 255 million
- National Womens Strategy cut by 9 million
- 12.5 % cut for suicide prevention
- 4 million cut from Youth Projects
For all Community Workers & Activists,
There has been a tremendous response from all over the country to the protest meeting and march to the Department of Finance. The IMPACT trade union is also supporting the action and will be attending on the day.
Below are details for the event. We are aiming to start the meeting on time, so please make every effort to arrive before 12 noon.
Protest Basics
- Make a placard tell the Department of Finance what you think of the cut backs.
- Does your organisation have a banner you can bring along?
- Whistles, drums, anything that will make noise. The Department need to hear us loud and clear.
Plan for the day
- Meeting begins at 12 noon sharp
- The meeting will be divided between 4 main speakers (20 minutes)
- Open session for comments from the floor (40 minutes)
- March begins at 1pm to the Department of Finance
- 1.30 Protest outside Department
- Please follow the direction of the stewards on the day
