The ‘Hidden Connolly’ articles published in Red Banner, previously unavailable to the general reader, are now available from the magazine’s website
Ninety three years after the execution of James Connolly, a huge amount of his writings remain unavailable to the general reader, never having been republished since their original appearance. While those with the opportunity of consulting newspaper files in reference libraries have been able to access them, most people have had no chance to read these works of Ireland’s greatest socialist.
Since 1997 the independent socialist magazine Red Banner has been attempting to fill the gap. Each issue of the magazine has featured ‘The Hidden Connolly’, a selection of these generally unavailable articles. The feature has proved extremely popular with readers of the magazine.
Now the articles published in issues 1-34 of Red Banner are available from the magazine’s website. A total of 66 articles are available. They are arranged in five sections, according to the newspapers where they originally appeared:
part 1: The Workers’ Republic, 1898-1903
part 2: The Harp
part 3: The Irish Worker
part 4: The Worker
part 5: The Workers’ Republic, 1915-16
The Hidden Connolly continues in Red Banner. More of the articles will feature in issue 36, which is out in June.
