Invite you to a Public Meeting:
'TAXING TIMES' - A DISCUSSION ON GLOBAL AND LOCAL TAX JUSTICE Thursday 23rd April 2009
Wynns Hotel, 35-39 Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1
7.30pm
SPEAKERS:
Charles Abugre (head of policy and advocacy, Christian Aid UK) - Charles is a global leading authority and campaigning voice on the subject of tax justice
Paul Sweeney, chief economic advisor to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions
Right now, everyone’s talking about tax justice. In Ireland, people are naturally outraged by super-rich individuals taking advantage of loopholes in the law so they can pay little or no tax on their fortunes.
On a global scale the problem is even more serious: every year, poor countries lose at least $160 billion because of tax dodging. That lost revenue would be enough to end extreme poverty at a stroke.
Tax havens like Switzerland and the Cayman Islands have played a central role in the dodgy financial practices that produced the global economic crisis we are currently facing, forcing governments at the recent G20 summit to discuss what action can be taken against financial cowboys.
Please join us to take part in this important global and local justice debate.
