New left group? New Social group!

The new group formed in Swords called SEED is a social group set up to facilitate different opinions and to introduce alternative and radical ideas for 'newcomers' to activism.

In a town like Swords, which has been disgustingly overdeveloped with no social facilities, it is important for young people interested in taking control of their lives to come together to share their experiences and ideas to re-establish a sense of community and to work together to make a better and more sustainable society for all.

The group consists of around ten people. We meet every week in River Valley and have discussed a range of topics from ''how to take control of our own lives'' to ''activism''. Some members of SEED are interested in cooking and growing. Some are interested in spirituality and peace. Some are interested in cultural revolution, some environmentalist issues and some are interested in politics and activism. Some simply enjoy listening to discussions and learning new things.

Whatever our beliefs and differences, we all agree there is something seriously wrong with society. We try not to criticise aspects of our community and society without an attempt to come up with an alternative solution.

We have been involved with campaigns and have participated in protests. As we are still in the early days of our group, we have not had any of our own campaigns. We are however planning workshops, discussions with other groups and direct activism. In general, the group is environmentally friendly, open to new ideas and we all agree.... working together, is better than thinking alone! At the moment the group is still organising itself. Most of the discussions are introductions because most members have been 'unexposed' to any sort of radical or alternative ideology.

One thing we equally find important is to educate each other and to share our beliefs and opinions and to make people realise that democracy does not come in the form of a vote every few years.

Everyone in SEED is friendly and approachable. The group, as I said, is still in its early days but we hope to become more socially, culturally and politically aware. And to share our ideas with others.

Any comments are greatly appreciated and I hope some people can contribute some good ideas!
