Protesting against the ongoing Irish complicity in war and torture
The regular monthly Shannon Watch vigil will be held on Sunday 8th March from 2 to 3pm. Meet at the small roundabout just before the security gantry.
US President Barack Obama abolished torture but he continues to outsource it to brutal regimes around the world - using the same rendition program as his predecessor did. And the Irish government, whose ministers were quick to praise President Obama for his moves to close Guantanamo, have gone silent on the matter. They still don't check or allow anyone to question US planes that land in Shannon and that might be transporting prisoners illegally.
Meanwhile the troop movements also continue through Shannon on their way to/from the immoral and failed occupation of Iraq. In February 334 civilians including 11 children were killed there and we played our part intheir deaths by refuelling the planes.
Surely the deaths, suffering and constant fear of Iraqis are too high a price to pay for local jobs - in an airport that the Irish government have turned into a foreign military airbase without our permission?
Please join us on Sunday 8th March for 1 hour to protest peacefully.
