Mass arrests at Democratic Party Convention in Denver

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Saturday August 30, 2008 23:42author by yobama

Scenes you won't see on the Irish TV news.

Police -many with no visible ID- pepper sprayed and attacked protesters. Nearly 100 arrests were made. Activists (many marching against the Afghan war) claimed that the arrests meant people would be held for the rest of the convention.

Some protesters who were sitting down were arrested - photographed and released with no charge.

Reports from Democracy Now. The wheelchair-bound man interviewed in the report is Ron Kovic, the Vietnam war veteran whose story was made into the film "Born on the Fourth of July".

As the Democratic Party listened to speeches inside the Pepsi Center on the opening day of the convention, a few hundred protesters had gathered to march. The police arrived in riot gear, surrounded the protesters, blocking them in and firing pepper spray into the crowd. Some protesters tried to flee across the park, but they were met by dozens of police officers who boxed them in there, and nearly a hundred people were arrested.
