memorial to limerick man to be unveiled in limerick
the limerick republican graves committee will remember a local volunteer murdered by a free state murder gang in august 1922.
the restored memorial to captain michael danford will be formally unveiled by phil fitzgerald of cappamore at the place where the murder took place,at the ballysimon road,at 3 o clock on sunday august 10th next.
capt danford was a married man with four children.the youngest michael was only eight weeks at the time.his youngest daughter margaret who was only two years old happily is still with us and hopefully will be able to attend the ceremony.
capt danford who lived at no 1 old dominic street.kings island took part in many attacks on the british forces in limerick during the tan war.he also saw action in the civil war on the republican side.he is one of two limerick men murdered by the free state forces during the civil war,the other harry brazier was murdered in limerick jail while he was a prisoner there.
