Charity Pub Quiz - Sponsor a Palestinian Student

category dublin | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Thursday May 08, 2008 12:01author by Rónan Nolan - Unaffiliatedauthor email ronannolan at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Date: 14 May 2008

Time: 7:30PM

Area: Dublin

Venue: Break For the Border, Stephen Street

SPONSOR A PALESTINIAN STUDENT quiz night.

Entry €10. Teams of 5, i.e. € 50 per team.

A group of Irish people went on a trip to the West Bank in Palestine in late February and while there we visited a local Palestinian university, An Najah, in Nablus in the West Bank.

Students in Nablus have great difficulty in accessing education due to the restrictions in place (they can spend between 4 & 6 hours a day queuing at checkpoints to get to university), not least in obtaining funding to actually go to university.

Semester costs are from 400 US$ to 1000 US$ approximately and some of us who were there thought it would be a good and positive thing if we could help to contribute to a students tuition.

We hope to help on 2 fronts. The first is to raise funds to pay the semester costs for a student (how long we can do this for will depend on the support we get). The second front, depending on where the student lives, might be to help towards his/her accommodation expenses, if they live outside the immediate area.

While in Palestine, we met with Lucy Dawson from the "Right to Education" group at Nablus University and we are corresponding with her and the University staff to to choose the most deserving student and to channel the funds through her association.

Many thanks to all who attended our pub quiz.

We raised over 2600 €, which will be used to fund a summer project in the Al Basma special needs school in Bethlehem, and a student at Nablus university.
