The Communist Party (PCV) is the oldest political party in Venezuela and has a long history of fighting for the working class, against the oligarchy and imperialism. It supported the Bolivarian movement led by Hugo Chavez from the very beginning. With eight seats in the National Assembly it participates in the Chavez government. In addition they have many members elected to local and regional assemblies across Venezuela. The "Polo Patriotico" is an allaince of the Socialist Unity Party (PSUV) led by Chavez, PCV and other party's.

Carolus Wimmer joined the PCV in 1971 and is currently their international Secretary. He was elected to the Latin American Parliament was elected its Vice-President this year.
