Ladyfest Cork 2008 – Putting Ladies in the Limelight!

Ladyfest Cork is a festival taking place on April 25th/26th/27th 2008. It is intended to celebrate and encourage the talents of women of all ages, colour, creed, background and sexuality, while highlighting the inequalities that still exist in today’s world. The festival will feature bands, artists, filmmakers, non-traditional performers and workshops. Ladyfest Cork is a community-based, voluntary, not-for-profit event and one of many Ladyfests taking place all around the world right now.

The line-up is now confirmed for Ladyfest Cork with an eclectic mix of rocking ladies from all over Ireland and Europe coming together in Cork this spring. The festival will satisfy all music tastes ranging from Punk, Pop, Rock, and Rap, to alternative music soundscapes and psychedelic instrumental post-punk including We Should Be Dead, Bela Emerson, Happy Homemakers, Ophelia and Tap Tap Click Click. Ladyfest Cork will also feature workshops on yoga, belly dancing, permaculture, chart your cycle and body image along with film screenings, discussions and chill out areas. The Visual Art exhibition will showcase art, performance and video from talented female artists along with music, giant origami and zine - making workshops.

The origins of Ladyfest developed from the DIY movement combined with inclusive feminist philosophy. Ladyfest drew inspiration from Riot Grrrl, an early 1990s grassroots movement originating in Olympia, Washington which put a feminist face on male-dominated punk rock culture. The first ever festival was in Olympia in August 2000 and have since taken place all over the world. While the ideology behind all Ladyfests is the same, each Ladyfest is very much a unique festival as each festival is run completely independently from the other.

It is hoped that this weekend will also serve to provoke thought around women’s issues and to create a weekend long space where feminist ideas can be explored and brought to the fore.
