The Special Rapporteur on the independence of the judiciary has a number of functions, including to examine " violations regarding the independence and impartiality of the judiciary and the independence of the legal profession".

The Special Rapporteur on human rights while countering terrorism has the mandate - among other issues - to assess whether human rights, including due process, are respected for all persons that face terrorism or related charges. He has been active in a number of cases that are similar to Mr. McKevitt's.
