SLIGO EASTER RISING COMMEMORATIONS
Sinn Fein in Sligo will be holding a number of events to commemorate the 92nd anniversary of the 1916 rebellion on Easter Sunday 23rd March. There will be a wreath laying ceremony at 12.00pm in Ballisadare by the graveside of 1916 veteran Martin Savage. The main commemoration will commence at the City Hall in Sligo at 3pm and proceed to the Republican plot in Sligo cemetery. The main oration will be delivered by Aenghus O Snodaigh T.D and Justice Spokesperson for Sinn Fein. These events are open to the public and people are encouraged to honour the memory of the 1916 martyrs by attending the events and wearing an Easter Lily.
"All across Ireland and indeed across the world the memory of the Irish rebellion of 1916 will be commemorated by thousands of people at many hundreds of events. Sinn Fein is currently stepping up our campaign for Irish reunification and is setting out detailed arguments on the benefit of an all-Ireland approach to our economy, infrastructure, health services, agriculture and environment. In this spirit we will be remembering the men and women of 1916 and the huge sacrifices they made to bring us closer to full Irish freedom. The Proclamation they issued sets out a vision of a society based on equality, justice and real democracy and remains the template for Republican activists up to the present day. I would also like to encourage people to proudly wear the Easter Lily. The Lily is the emblem of unity between the different traditions on this island as well as symbolising the sacrifice of the men and women of 1916. Today it is the symbol of the future unity, prosperity and equality of all the people of Ireland."
