Irish Premiere of Poverty Requiem

Event for UN World Poverty Day

The celebrated Ballymun Gospel Choir give the first Irish performance of Peter Maissan's Povery Requiem on Sunday 14th October 2007. Around the world the Poverty Requiem is used in the context of the action campaign Global Call to Action against Poverty.

The requiem is a vocal work bridging the gap between groups from different cultural backgrounds, between different continents and nationalities. Because the Requiem can be performed in any social and cultural context, by small and big troupes, with different musical and other artistic elements, such as dance, it is possible to view the Poverty Requiem as a community art project, in which a balance is created between amateurs and professionals, and between the artistic performance and the political message.
The Requiem will be performed in more than 25 countries, including Kenya, Senegal, Congo, Colombia, the Netherlands, Pennyslvania and – thanks to Ballymun Gospel Choir – Ireland. The choir is honoured to give the only Irish performance of this stunning piece of music for percussion & voice.
The organizers are hoping to secure a place in the Guinness Book of Records for global music performance, so the more people we can get involved the better. Join us as we ‘sing poverty goodbye’ in this history-making performance on Sunday October 14th, 7pm, Virgin Mary Church, Ballymun.
