"Miss D" should have termination of pregnancy facilitated in an Irish obstetric unit
Doctors for Choice advocate for safe and legal abortion in Ireland.
In the current case Miss D should be offered a termination of pregnancy in a publicly funded Irish obstetric unit.
This would ensure that she receives local medical and social care, with the necessary follow-up of post-mortem, genetic counselling and psychological support as is appropriate.
It is clear that there has been support from Irish obstetricians for this course of action. In 2002, two of the Masters of the Dublin maternity hospitals acknowledged that they would prefer to see termination of pregnancy offered in Ireland, to women who are affected by fatal foetal anomaly.
It is time to end the political hypocrisy surrounding the matter of abortion and womens’ health care in this country.
We call on the leaders of all political parties to respond to our statement that Miss D be offered a termination of pregnancy in Ireland.
