Programme launch of the 2nd Guth Gafa documentary film festival
The 2nd Guth Gafa documentary film festival will take place in Gort an Choirce in the Donegal Gaeltacht from 10th-13th May.
The 2nd Guth Gafa documentary film festival retains its strong commitment to socially aware films with a political message. This year's programme includes 'China Blue', a secretly filmed account of working conditions in a Chinese textile factory; 'The Chances of the World Changing', which follows a writer living in Manhattan who devoted himself to rescuing hundreds of endangered turtles from extinction, risking his own life in the process; '9 Star Hotel' about the invisible existence of Palestinians who are forced to work 'illegally' within the Israeli state; a discussion on the Radharc legacy of radical film-making with a social conscience; a selection of Irish language films that deal with emigration from Donegal and the premiere of 'Noisemaker', a biopic of Dundalk's Jinx Lennon, who will also be delighting us with a live performance. We are also screening 'Streetfight', an Oscar nominated documentary on the lengths politicians will go to hold onto political power.
This screening will be followed by a discussion with Irish journalist Frank Connolly. The Guth Gafa festival is unique in having all of its (24) invited directors present for post screening discussions, and we also have achieved the not inconsiderable coup of having Geoff Gilmore, the director of Sundance film festival, present for a seminar on independent film making.
