All 30 County Councillors at a recent meeting of Galway County Council voted unanimously to ban the spreading of this material for the duration of the Galway water crisis at least. (Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Labour, PDs, Sinn Fein and non party)
It is not tested for carcinogens (cancer causing substances) but there is a fear that this material could contain substances that may cause cancer.
Lime does not kill cryptosporidium.
A treatment plant for the sludge was supposed to be built in Tuam – this never happened.
Fairly recently pollution of local private water supplies would indicate that this is the material that caused the pollution.
Sewerage in Dublin receives tertiary treatment which dries the sewerage and forms it into pellets. This takes place at their plant in Ringsend.
