THIS YEAR’S RATHMINES FESTIVAL: BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!
The annual Rathmines festival takes place from Friday 20th-Sunday 22nd April in various venues around the village. This year the festival boasts over thirty events in fifteen venues around Rathmines – the vast majority of them free of charge.
Highlights of this year’s festival include a Céilí on Friday 20th in St. Mary’s College with traditional music group Gréasú (admission €5). On Saturday 21st you can catch a Media Forum featuring Éamonn Dunphy and other prominent journalists (for free), and a concert by the Saw Doctors in St. Louis School (admission €18). Sunday 22nd will see a recital by members of the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society in their own hall (free), and a recording of RTÉ Radio One’s Poetry Programme with Pat Boran in the St. Louis School (free).
There will be several other free events including a “Grand Old Tyme” Variety Show and an art trail of local studios and exhibitions called “ArtMines”. Younger participants will be able to enjoy free readings and workshops which have been specially designed for toddlers and children. Those who are curious to see the inside of an army barracks can go on a free tour of the Cathal Brugha Barracks on Saturday or Sunday.
Festival Director Michael O’Dea of Rathmines College, who initiated the festival in 2002, is excited at the expansion of this year’s festival: “Rathmines will be the ‘capital of culture’ during the festival weekend, so if you enjoy the arts, it’s the place to be.”
This year’s expansion has been largely the result of involving more local organisations and individuals in the running of the festival. That has been a major step towards their goal of making Rathmines Festival a nationally important festival within five years.
