Palestinian singer Reem Kelani Gives All-Day Musical Workshop

category dublin | arts and media | event notice author Tuesday October 31, 2006 01:49author by Hugh H - IPSC

The truly exceptional Reem Kelani is the star attraction in an all-day musical workshop at St. Raphael's in
Stillorgan, on Saturday, November 4th.

IPSC could not recommend a better and more uplifting introduction to Palestinian culture than a day with the initimitable Reem Kelani, the British-based diaspora Palestinian whose vocation is "to introduce
the cultural and musical side of Palestine to the West". Reem, who played an electrifying fundraiser for the IPSC last year, gives workshops on Arabic and Palestinian music in schools and colleges around the UK, and has just released her debut album: ‘Sprinting Gazelle – Palestinian Songs from the Motherland and the Diaspora’. In recent years, she wrote and presented ‘Distant Chords’ for BBC Radio Four, featuring the music of migrant communities in the UK (Afghan, Yemeni, Kurdish, Armenian, Micronesian and Portuguese).

The workshop, which runs from 9.30-6.30, will begin with Roz Crampton working with flute, drums and bowls. She will be followed by Reem, who will introduce participants to Arabic sounds and rhythms, in a
way that only she can. If you have never seen Reem perform and motivate a group then this is an absolute must. The day will end with a gong bath. There is an evening performance by Roz and Anthony
Sauchella, also included in the price - 90 euro with vegetarian lunch and coffees.

Contact Yvonne Marrinan for booking - 0872540159 or ymarrinan@eircom.net. A booking fee in advance of 40 euro assures a place.
