Hilary Clinton will pay dearly for failing to object to the war

A genuis and sickening piece of pre-presidential election fiction/propaganda by the US Republican party

Senator Hilary Clinton might want to reflect on her calculation that by nailing her colours to the pro war-on-terror mast, it would boost her chances of being elected President of the United States. But the strategy looks unlikely to reap the dividends she clearly hoped it would.

ABC in the US and the BBC are tomorrow to air an American made documentary, starring Harvey Keitel (whose films this former fan will in future boycott) about the lead up to 9/11and which lays the blame for 9/11 firmly at the door of Bill Clinton. The claim is that because he was so obsessed with Monica Lewinsky, OBL was able to get by unnoticed by the Democrat administration.

Clinton is furious. "They ought to tell the truth" he is quoted as saying in today's Times "They shouldnt have scenes that are directly contradicted by the findings of the 9/11 report"

A spokesperson for the Clinton Foundation has said "It is despicable that ABC/Disney would insist on airing a fictional version of what is a serious and emotional event for our country."

Madeleine Albright, and others wrote to Disney's chief executive, Robert Iger, saying that the drama was "factaully and incontrovertibly inaccurate...It is unconscionable to mislead the American public about one of the most horrendous tragedies our country has evern known."

The main consultant to the 'documentary' was Thomas Keane, a former Republican New Jersey governor and chairman of the 9/11 commission - the one about which there was so much secrecy and controversy - and which many of the victims families, among many others, believe to be a whitewash.

If this documentary gains any credence among the US electorate, then Hill's chances of being elected are abou zero. She will be forced, as the Clintons were throughout their time at the White House, to spend all her time in the lead up to the elctions defending herself and her husband against these allegations instead of campaigning on administrative policy issues. And that is to say nothing about the effect on the midterm elections just a few weeks away in November.

On the other hand, it could be a bad miscalulation by the Republicans, desperate to take attention off the reality of the way their War of Terror is going. The US public was sick and tired of the Lewinsky affair by the time it was over and this tactic must surely be transparent to even the most gullible of US voters.

The lesson to be learned here is surely that there is no payback on appeasing liars and bullies like Bush and Blair. Something for Gordon Brown to chew on too.
