Darfur: The World is Not Going to Act

category international | anti-war / imperialism | opinion/analysis author Wednesday September 06, 2006 15:00author by Hal Brognola

Sudan has promised that the country will become a second Iraq is international forces intervene

Nobody really knows how many people have died in Darfur over the last few years - certainly the number is in 100,000's.
The end of this month the AU, African Union forces will withdraw and the Sudanese government promise it will replace them with its own troops - the same troops who have bombed and strafed and murdered their way through the region already - this time of course with a former rebel group who recently turned on their comrades to get concessions from Al-Bashir's regime.

The US and UK, the most powerful military forces in the world are unfortunately mired in Iraq and Afghanistan at the moment trying to stop similar Islamic fundementalists from killing innocent men women and children. Mentions that Sudan will become another Iraq will hardly attract American and British public opinion to commit to a military force to halt the genocide in Darfur just as the fiasco in Mogadishu in 1993 terrified Western politicians about intervening in Rwanda in 1994 or Congo in the late 1990's or in Sierra Leone and Liberia until it was FAR to late.

Russia and China have a veto on the UN security council and supported by their accolites have refused to admit the what is happening in Darfur is genocide.
They will surely veto and proposal to intervene militarily.
They need the oil and they have a lucrative arms industry to think of.

In short the people of Darfur are abandoned to their fate.
