LGBT Pride Northwest (August 26, Sligo)
Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people from all over the northwest of Ireland will take to the streets of Sligo on Saturday 26th August to celebrate LGBT Pride Northwest. The Parade is the centrepiece of a 3-day get-together, which will also include a social with live entertainment + disco and a Sunday afternoon picnic on the beach.
Organisers hope the first-ever Northwest Pride will increase the visibility of LGBT people in the area and promote social inclusion by improving LGBT peoples contacts with each other and with the wider community. Heterosexuals are also being asked to support the Parade by marching under the banner of "Straight But Not Narrow – Heterosexuals Supporting LGBT Rights."
Since its beginnings over 35 years ago in the US, LGBT Pride has grown into a huge international tradition, celebrated in thousands of locations around the world. Here in Ireland, Dublin's LGBT Pride has become a major tourist event, attracting thousands of visitors.
LGBT Pride has also been publicly celebrated in Cork, Belfast, Derry and Waterford amongst other places. Closer to home, Galway has had Pride Parades for almost 20 years.
So far, organisers say, the response from local businesses and public representatives has been "excellent" and they hope to be well received by the people of Sligo on the day. The Parade will leave The Mall at 2.15pm on Saturday 26th and make its way to the City Hall. All are welcome.
