Two Public Meetings

Two public meetings will be held in June in the run up the Pitstop Ploughshares trial (which starts on 5 July), around the theme of 'women working for justice and peace'. Below are the details of the first one. The details of the second meeting, on 29 June, will be posted in the next few days. These meetings are being held in association with Afri.

Public meeting in association with Afri

Date: Thursday, June 22

Time: 7.30 p.m.

Venue: Wynn's Hotel, Abbey Street

'Women Working for Justice and Peace: Hunger Strikes and Women'

Speakers:

Mary Condren , theologian, feminist scholar and activist, will discuss the ethics of using hunger strikes and other forms of self-sacrifice as political weapons.

Rosanna Flynn , long-time activist and spokesperson for Residents against Racism, will discuss the plight of asylum-seekers in Ireland and the recent Afghan hunger strikes in St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Chairperson :

Deirdre Clancy , anti-war activist and member of the Pitstop Ploughshares group, who have been on bail for three and a half years for disarming a US warplane at Shannon Airport.

I've had queries about this: meetings open to everyone, gender-wise.

The second meeting is on June 29th. Speaking will be Mairead Corrigan Maguire, Nobel Laureate and Peace People activist, and Andrea Needham of the Seeds of Hope Ploughshares. The Seeds of Hope women were famously acquitted of doing damage to fighter jet bound for East Timor, and their 10th anniversary is this year.
