Press release states:
"UNION SLAMS MEAT COMPANY’S IMMORAL SELL OFF OF NI WORKERS JOBS
Angry workers at the Dungannon Meats plant in Northern Ireland condemned the company for proposing to make 46 of them redundant while replacing them with agency labour. Workers at the plant said that management told them the outsourcing of their jobs was a cost cutting exercise, and that those being made redundant will receive only minimum statutory payments.
The threatened redundancies come after 300 workers at the plant signed a petition supporting recognition of the Transport and General Workers Union (ATGWU) to represent them.
ATGWU senior organiser Dessie Henderson said: “We have been trying to work with the company for several months, and have now sought a meeting on the threatened redundancies.
“Up to now our reasonable requests for talks have been ignored and we are left with no choice but to take this issue into the public arena.
In addition to bringing the issue to local politicians, we are contacting those responsible for the ethical purchasing policies of the major supermarkets supplied by Dungannon Meats. If necessary we will protest outside the supermarkets stores to highlight this situation to shoppers who will certainly not approve of the company’s action.
None of Dungannon Meats’ competitors have resorted to this sort of immoral behaviour towards their Northern Ireland workers, and we are determined that this company should not get away with it. As a union we will not rest until we reversed this decision and are allowed to properly represent our members in Dungannon Meats.”

This is indeed a threat to all, and we are trying to make our branch aware, at the risk of being ridiculed for supporting the trade union movement. This is the type of thing that a General Strike would cure in one day, if workers could ever realise the power they have.
I am finding more and more of this type of action happening in N. Ireland. Whilst Stormont remains inactive we have to rely on the Unions to do the right thing. I hope that this issue can be resolved and the management be aware that they are not behaving in a fair and reasnoble manner.
WORKERS OF THE WORLD UNITE!!!
Well said Keith, and if the major store is Tesco's I suspect the workers will get a lot of support. I mean Tesco's support fair trade, except in Dungannon obviously.
An injury to one is of concern to all.
Hi, This action is the biggest attack on the civil liberties of workers within these shores and must be opposed at all costs. Voice your concern by e-mailing astewart@dungannonmeats.com. If this action goes ahead the rammifications for workers within every sector would be immense.
The solution ought to be to allow these "agency workers" to take the Dungannon jobs and then for the left to encourage them to join trade unions and fight for a living wage etc, etc. Then the Dungannon workers sacrifice will not have been in vain.
