Amnesty cite Shannon complicity in US "extraordinary renditions"

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Wednesday June 01, 2005 02:13author by Anonymous

Newly published Amnesty report suggests Shannon may be complicit in the illegal "extraordinary rendition" of detainees to foreign nations conducted by US aircraft.

A report issued by Amnesty International on the 31 May warns that "media and other reports state that Frankfurt, Mallorca and Shannon airports are known stop-off points for unmarked CIA jets carrying irregular renditions. Member States that allow their territory to be used for stop-overs are colluding in serious breaches of human rights."

New York TImes runs with related story in yesterday's edition - focussing on CIA use of charter aircraft operated through front companies. Names and numbers included. All the news that's fit to print, as the NYT slogan goes. But not in the Irish mainstream media .... people might feel just a little ashamed?
