It is expected there will be no refuse collections in Waterford city today due to unofficial strike action by around 100 city council workers.

Yesterday 50 staff staged a sit-in at the city's Bolton Street depot in protest at what they said was the council's use of outside contract staff without consultation.

Workers from a number of departments were involved in the action and staff from further sections joined the protest this morning.

Staff at the city's main water supply plant at Tycor are also understood to be taking part in the action.

Meetings have been taking place between union officials and council management. Ballots for strike action had been taken two weeks ago on the issue of contract workers.
