IBEC members in the northwest have told local authorities that they will not pay the increases in rates this year until they get full consultation on the issue.
IBEC regional president Jim Hoey said businesses in Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim were no longer prepared to simply accept major increases in rates and other charges without question.
Commercial rates increases of 5% have been adopted by Donegal and Leitrim County Councils, while in Sligo the increase is 5.2%
Dr Hoey, who is the Managing Director of Masonite in Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim, said IBEC is now seeking meetings with the local authorities to discuss the impact of the charges on businesses in the region.
IBEC wants to set up a new system of consultation on the issue for the future.
