Man slashed wrists at Cork Airport after entry refused

Gardaí in Cork were yesterday investigating an incident in which a 36
year-old Romanian slashed his wrists and threatened to cut his throat
after he was refused entry to the country.

The man was one of four Romanians who were refused entry at Cork Airport
on Saturday night because they didn't have proper documentation upon
disembarking from a flight from Barcelona.

The man was being questioned by immigration police when he produced a
razor blade and slashed both his wrists. He also threatened to cut his
throat but was prevented from doing so by police.

The man was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was treated for
his injuries overnight before being discharged.

He was subsequently arrested by gardaí and taken to Togher Garda station
for questioning.

It is understood that it is the second time in a week that a number of
Eastern Europeans have been refused entry at Cork Airport after arriving
on a flight from Barcelona.

According to Garda sources, it is not the first time that somebody
refused entry has attempted to harm themselves and follows a similar
incident when two Eastern European men slashed their wrists after being
refused entry at the airport in 2003.
