Lynton Bennett, Labour County Councillor for Buxton South, has resigned from the Labour Party to join Respect. Below is a message from Lynton to the Respect meeting in Glossop evening 8th September.
Dear Friends,
Yesterday, Tuesday 7th September, I wrote to John Williams, Labour Leader of Derbyshire County Council, where I said:
Dear John,
I have taken time to reconsider my resignation letter of May. I am still of the opinion that the Labour Party under Tony Blair is no different to the Tories. The government's policies of backdoor privatisation, low direct rate of top tax and, lack of employment rights add up to a poverty of aspiration for working people in this country. Therefore, I have decided to leave the Labour Group and intend to provide an alternative to Labour in Buxton in the future.
Yours sincerely,
Lynton Bennett
I believe Respect is that alternative, a genuine socialist alternative to Labour. I urge all of you to vote for, campaign for, and join Respect. Together we can build Respect in the High Peak into the strong socialist alternative we all desperately want and need.
Yours fraternally,
Lynton Bennett,
RESPECT County Councillor Buxton South
