The men and women in uniform may have felt it. Deeply. But the war in Iraq looked just the same as the day before as the U.S. hit a sad milestone: over 1,000 American lives lost in Iraq.

The Fallujah air strikes were in retaliation for recent attacks on U.S. Marines - seven of whom were killed by a suicide bomb on Monday.

That bombing was among the attacks that pushed the U.S. death toll up to 1,003 - including three civilian workers.

The U.S. military has not released any numbers on total Iraqi deaths since the beginning of the war, but conservative estimates by private groups put the Iraqi death toll as being at least 10,000 so far.
