Slashdot Adds Politics section

category international | politics / elections | other press author Tuesday September 07, 2004 20:10author by R. Isible

US Elections covered

Slashdot, the original and largest web-based discussion forum noted for it's advocacy of GNU/Linux as an operating system and its hundreds of thousands of rabid URI clickers has added a discussion section for politics.

Slashdot has well over half a million users, mostly working in the tech industries. It was one of the earliest web-based discussion forums (actually existing as ChipsNDip initially).

It's topics of discussion up until now have been to do with all things nerd and tech: "news for nerds. stuff that matters" is its byline. Mostly politics has been treated as flaming and trolling, irrelevant to the nerd/geek community unless it has an overt technological edge.

Now Slashdot has added a new topic area explicitly for the discussion of politics. It will be inevitably focussed on the US elections this year, but may evolve.

This is absolutely terrible. Slashdot has enough left-wing wining without a politics section. I think politics should be left to the politics blogs. Keep it out of Slashdot.
