The European Parliament has asked the European Union's highest court to annul a treaty between the EU and the United States for sharing information about trans-Atlantic airline passengers, the court said Friday.
The European Commission, the EU's executive body, and EU governments signed an agreement with the United States in May on sharing such information despite privacy objections from Parliament.
The agreement compels European airlines to turn over 34 pieces of information about each passenger. The Parliament decided to refer the issue to the European Court of Justice because the assembly lacks the power to block the agreement. A verdict is likely within six months.
