Justice for asylum seekers
DEMONSTRATION
Dáil Éireann, Kildare Street, Dublin
12.30 pm, Wednesday 22 June
20 June is World Refugee Day. 26 June is the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. It is an appropriate week to look at how Ireland deals with refugees, including people who have fled from torture. Ireland’s asylum system is fundamentally prejudiced against people seeking to escape persecution and poverty. Only 1½ per cent of applications were approved last year.
The system should be taken out of the hands of the Minister and Department of Justice, and run by an independent body along the lines of the Human Rights Commission. Instead of going out of our way to smear and turn down people seeking asylum, we should be doing all we can to provide them with the protection they need and a chance to build a new life as equal members of Irish society.
Come to the demonstration on Wednesday 22 June at the Dáil and add your voice to the demand for HUMAN RIGHTS, NOT RACISM.
